In collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization office in Kuwait, and the Public Authority for Food and Nutrition, the first national workshop was held to implement a plan aimed at accelerating the fight against obesity in Kuwait. The workshop took place under the patronage and presence of Dr. Munther Al-Hasawi, Assistant Undersecretary for Public Health Affairs at the Ministry of Health.
This event was organized following Kuwait’s selection as one of 32 leading countries to participate in a global initiative to tackle obesity, which includes five countries from the Eastern Mediterranean region.
The workshop featured representatives from various official bodies in the country and experts from the World Health Organization (WHO). Discussions focused on the implementation of the plan to expedite the elimination of obesity, with an emphasis on the timeline for achieving these goals. Experts highlighted that the plan aims to reduce obesity rates, which pose a significant health burden on societies, by employing effective, evidence-based strategies.
Dr. Hasnaa Ayyad, Director of the Nutrition and Feeding Department at the Ministry of Health, noted that Kuwait’s selection for this program underscores the country’s strong commitment and proactive leadership in promoting health for all. She also mentioned that the development plan and New Kuwait Vision 2035 include initiatives designed to lower obesity rates in the country.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Ayyad stated that a national roadmap would be created to accelerate actions against obesity in Kuwait using a proven, evidence-based approach. This involves challenging existing norms, promoting cross-sector collaboration, enhancing community awareness, encouraging collective action, and establishing new standards for addressing obesity at the national level.
