His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, representing His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, arrived at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York on Thursday, leading the Kuwaiti delegation to the High-Level Meetings of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. He was welcomed at the airport by Kuwait’s Ambassador to the United States, Sheikha Al-Zain Sabah Al-Nasser Al-Sabah, and Kuwait’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Tareq Mohammad Al-Banai.
Speaking to reporters, His Highness the Crown Prince expressed his pride in representing His Highness the Amir at the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly and the Summit of the Future. He highlighted the significance of the UN General Assembly, which will bring together 113 heads of state and government, offering an important opportunity for the Kuwaiti delegation to engage with global leaders on bilateral, regional, and international matters.
His Highness voiced hope that the Summit of the Future, proposed by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, would set the foundation for collective and more effective global action in addressing current and future challenges. He emphasized that the summit will provide a platform for UN member states to reaffirm their commitment to the principles of the UN Charter and international law, while also advancing necessary reforms within the UN system and global financial institutions.
His Highness noted the need for modernization of the 79-year-old UN and the reform of the Security Council, as it has struggled to fulfill its mandate to maintain international peace and security. He expressed concern over the mass destruction taking place in the occupied Palestinian territories, calling it a blatant violation of international law and the UN Charter.
Additionally, the Crown Prince stressed the importance of overhauling international financial institutions to improve their effectiveness. The Summit of the Future will focus on five key areas: sustainable development and financing; international peace and security; science and technology; youth and future generations; and global governance. The summit is expected to conclude with the adoption of the “Pact for the Future,” a consensus agreement among UN member states.- KUNA
