Bangalore secures eight-wicket victory in WPL final as Delhi crumbles

In New Delhi, Royal Challengers Bangalore clinched an eight-wicket victory in the Women’s Premier League final after Delhi Capitals suffered a batting collapse. Bangalore chased down the target of 113 runs with three balls to spare, reaching 115-2. Australia’s Ellyse Perry scored an unbeaten 35, while Sophie Devine from New Zealand contributed 32 runs, including five fours and a six.

Delhi got off to a strong start with a 64-run opening partnership between Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma. However, Sophie Molineux’s three quick wickets in the eighth over halted their momentum. Delhi lost their last seven wickets for just 49 runs, finishing with 113 all out.

Despite the collapse, Delhi captain Lanning acknowledged Bangalore’s deserving victory. Bangalore, considered unexpected finalists, secured their spot after defeating Mumbai Indians in the eliminator match.

Bangalore, historically seen as underdogs, has never won the Indian Premier League despite making three finals appearances. The Women’s Premier League, launched last year, has gained popularity and financial success, attracting large crowds and lucrative media deals.- AFP
