FIFA Suspends and Fines Ronaldo for a Gesture

RIYADH: Cristiano Ronaldo was suspended for one game by Saudi Arabia’s football regulatory body on Thursday due to a gesture he made on the field the previous weekend that was deemed to be a “provocation.” The move, which violated the Saudi Arabian Football Federation’s rules against inciting the public during a match, resulted with the Al-Nassr captain being fined a total of 30,000 riyals ($8,000).

There is no way to challenge the decision. Following his team’s 3-2 victory over Al-Shabab, a video surfaced of Ronaldo repeatedly shoving his hand in the direction of his groin in reaction to supporters insulting him by screaming Lionel Messi’s name. The post went viral very fast and became the most popular topic on Saudi social media.
