With two goals in less than 10 minutes, Kylian Mbappé ended his scoring drought in the Spanish league, leading Real Madrid to a 2-0 victory over Real Betis. The highly anticipated signing of the season, Mbappé had previously scored once in Real Madrid’s UEFA Super Cup win against Atalanta last month, but had not found the net in his first three Spanish league appearances.

Mbappé opened the scoring at the Santiago Bernabéu with a low left-footed shot from inside the box, following a precise backheel pass from Federico Valverde in the 67th minute. He then extended the lead by converting a penalty in the 75th minute, awarded after a foul on Vinícius Júnior. Prior to this match, Madrid had drawn two of their first three games, with their sole victory coming against Valladolid a few rounds ago, also at the Bernabéu.

This win brought the defending champions to within four points of leaders Barcelona, who are the only team to have won all four of their matches so far this season. Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti stated that there was no pressure on Mbappé to end his scoring drought in the league.

The result left Betis winless after three matches, having drawn their first two games. Young Brazilian forward Vitor Roque, who is on loan from Barcelona, came on as a second-half substitute for Betis.

Madrid has not conceded a goal in their last five league matches at the Bernabéu, a first for the club in the competition since 1996. They remain unbeaten in 26 home league games under Ancelotti, with 22 wins and four draws. Despite this win, Madrid’s current five points from three matches marks their worst start to a league season since 2019-20, the year they won the title.

In another match, Sevilla lost 2-0 at home to Girona, leaving them winless after four matches. Iván Martín and Abel Ruiz scored for Girona, who have now secured two consecutive victories. Girona will face Barcelona in the upcoming Catalan derby.
