Yu of South Korea wins the top prize for “Sleep” at the Gerardmer festival.The renowned Gerardmer International Fantastic Film Festival Grand Prix was given to South Korean director Jason Yu on Sunday for his debut feature-length film, “Sleep.” The 34-year-old’sfilmis a comedy-horror about a young couple whose lives are turned upside down when their wife is terrorized by her husband’s terrifying sleepwalking habits. The Jury Prize went to Frenchwoman Celine Rouzet’s “En Attendant la Nuit” (For Night Will Come) and Portuguese director Gabriel Abrantes’ “Amelia’s Children.”

In “Amelia’s Children,” a man who initially thinks he is an orphan is reunited with his family. In the story “En Attendant la Nuit,” an adolescent who depends on human blood to survive develops feelings for his neighbor.

Briton Barnaby Clay’s “The Seeding” took home the Great East Region Youth Jury Award, while Argentine Demian Rugna’s “When Evil Lurks” won both the Critics’ Prize and the Audience Award. The Grand Prize for Short Film went to Frenchman Rodrigue Huart’s film “Transylvanie.” Films from the science fiction, horror, and fantasy genres are the festival’s specialty. AFP
